GOOD TALK WITH REED HARKNESS
Director, Producer & Cinematographer of SAM NOW
Reed Harkness attended "film school" in his backyard and garage. At age 18, he began making a series of short films starring his younger brother Sam. This was the beginning of a project 25 years in the making: SAM NOW, a coming-of-age film that follows his brother from age 11 to 36. SAM NOW premiered on PBS Independent Lens and won 12 awards at film festivals worldwide. Reed previously directed the award-winning 30-minute documentary FOREST ON FIRE and the documentary series for Topic, HOUSE ON FIRE. See more at http://haha.work
Expertise
Many of the themes the film grapples with – mental health, family dynamics and intergenerational trauma – can be spots of tension or deep stress. Instead of a call–to–action, this is a call to introspection. SAM NOW is a deeply personal and vulnerable story about my family, one that I share with the hope that everyone who watches the film can see a piece of themselves within it. I've seen a huge outpouring of emotion and connection from audiences so far. The more we heal individually, the more our community heals and the more we can help each other.
