OUR LAND, OUR FREEDOM tells the story of 2 extraordinary Kenyan women - a mother and daughter, Mukami and Wanjugu Kimathi - who wish to shine a light on the long-kept secret atrocities of British colonial rule in Kenya. Mukami was a freedom fighter in Kenya's 1950's independence movement, and was married to its iconic leader, Dedan Kimathi. In 1957, Kimathi was hanged by the British, who disposed of his body, the whereabouts kept secret. Since then, Mukami has been searching for his remains, but becomes too frail to continue so Wanjugu, takes over this quest. Along her journey, Wanjugu meets elders who tell her about a buried history of colonial atrocities, including concentration camps, mass graves, and the vast theft of land that left hundreds of thousands Kenyans destitute. She also meets land rights advocates, who spark a new mission for Wanjugu: she realizes she must demand compensation or resettlement for those whose land was taken by the British. Working closely with her mother, she transforms into a powerful leader in her own right, exposing past colonial crimes, while building a nation-wide grassroots movement for land resettlement. This intimate portrayal of a daughter’s mission to bring peace to her mother, exposes the dark chapter of colonialism in Kenya, and features Mukami and Wanjugu's powerful interventions to shift it's legacy - a story that will reverberate not only in Kenya, but also in post-independent states across the world.
