At the turn of the 20th century, among the millions of immigrants arriving in the United States were thousands of Muslims from Lebanon, which was then part of Greater Syria. In this film, host Aymann Ismail, a staff writer for Slate Magazine, shares the story of two of these immigrants: a woman named Mary Juma and her husband, Hassen, who settled in North Dakota in the early 1900s. As Aymann travels across the Midwest, he explores how the community founded by Mary and Hassen built one of the first purpose-built mosques in the country, allowing them to maintain their traditions while forging a new identity on the American frontier.
