Asma Khalid, co-host of BBC’s “The Global Story” podcast, travels to Sacramento and Phoenix to uncover the story of Mir Dad, a South Asian Muslim man who arrived in the United States in 1917 and settled in the American Southwest. Asma explores the prejudice faced by South Asians of all religions while immigrating to America in the early 20th century, along with the race-based naturalization and immigration laws that shaped their lives. Asma also learns how Mir Dad became part of a growing number of South Asian and Mexican American couples in the 1920s and 30s, who built their lives together and formed blended communities. Today, the descendants of these couples continue to cherish their mixed heritage. Featuring readings by actors Kamal Khan (Quantico) and David Rasche (The West Wing, Succession).
