FROM THE SHADOWS uses the imagery of public art to delve into missing narratives…Paint cans and stencils in hand, artist Leena Kejriwal sprays splattered walls with a black shadow of a girl. Curious onlookers stop to stare at her message #missing #everyeightminutes. The day a missing girl returns and asks for help to file a case against her traffickers, Leena needs to step up from being an artist to support a prosecution case. A grueling court battle questions whether law enforcement agencies instead of protecting victims are part of a network that exploits them? Why is the conviction rate for trafficking less than 10% in India so traffickers roam free while thousands of girls continue to go missing. Leena connects with veteran activist Hasina who has helped a survivor win the rare conviction of a political kingpin despite 400 witnesses turning hostile. A rocky journey through the Indian subcontinent’s most trafficked route connects stories of survivors and the women who fight alongside them in a courageous bid for justice.
